Projekt Exa(k)t!

From the second I got to Lunds Fontänhus I felt warmly welcomed. The first thing I met was an open door with the word “welcome” over it and when getting into the house it was full of people and activity. I was greeted by Jamie Woodworth, communicator for Fontänhusets new project, Projekt Exa(k)t, which I was there to talk about this day. Jamie and the project’s research and development trainee, Danna Villada, showed me around the house before we met up with Matilda Espmarker, director and IPS-coach, to have some coffee and talk about their project.

Lunds Fontänhus is a community centre for mental health and well-being where they have different units for their members to get engaged within, such as gardening, cooking, etc. They also have a study program for students including for example individual coaching. Apart from that Lunds Fontänhus offer social activities and a place where you can get a sense of coherence and meaningfulness. When working with these projects they’ve realised that there’s a gap in support for students struggling with mental health issues who have graduated but not yet gotten into the working life.

The project is a collaboration between Lunds Fontänhus, Lund’s municipality, Finsam (financial coordination) and Arbetsförmedlingen (Sweden’s public employment agency). The focus is to support alumni from some kind of higher education who are ready to enter the working life and have experienced or are experiencing some kind of mental health issue. The purpose is to help people find, get and keep a job. In their work Exa(k)t uses two models; (1) a study rehabilitation model which works with giving people a sense of coherence, individual mentorship, a possibility for physical exercise, networking and learning together and social activities and (2) IPS (individual placement support) which is about giving support when preparing for a job and when starting a new job.

I was really curious about the name of the project, EXA(K)T, and Matilda told me that the idea actually came from one of Fontänhuset’s members. She thought that it would both symbolize that the project is addressed to people who have graduated (“EXAT” in swedish is a short way of saying that you have graduated) and also what will hopefully be a lot of EXAKT (exact) matches between employers and employees.

What can this project offer you?
If you are a job seeker
with some kind of academic background who struggles with mental health issues Exa(k)t arrange different workshops and discussions on how to do a good job interview, how to talk to your boss about your mental health, how to prepare yourself for your first week on your new job, how to make an academic career, and much more. They can also give you mentoring, help with finding interesting job opportunities and support you during your first time at a new job. The project is very flexible and you can customize it according to your needs.
If you are an employer who wants to work more active these questions to get a more diverse work place and thereby broaden it’s competence Exa(k)t offers education on how to work with these questions at your work place.

CV-workshop at Fontänhuset with Projekt Exa(k)t!

Throughout our conversation I could really tell how passionate all three were about Projekt Exa(k)t and I understood that a lot of time, work and ambition lies behind it. They told me that the dream with the project, except from inspire individuals and help them get employments, is that Fontänhuset as well as Lunds municipality and Arbetsförmedlingen in the long term will have an established and set project with people who works only with these questions. With the ambition and good spirit I saw and heard during our meeting I really think that their dream will come true.

Are you interested in joining this project? Exa(k)t work with both Swedish and international alumni in all ages who are work-ready and who have experienced or are experiencing some kind of mental health issue. A day at the office

Working at the Lund University Alumni Office is anything but boring. Here’s a quick glimpse on what’s currently going on at our office.

Morning seminar: “From innovation to commercial success”

Godmorgon Lund at Mobile Heights

Morning spent at Mobile Heights and Godmorgon Lund, the city’s breakfast meetings to inspire innovation and growth. But first a note on biking in Lund. I travelled from the western parts of Lund to Mobile Heights in the north, and it was a steep bike ride uphill the whole way! And they say that Skåne is flat… It was a tough start of the day. Thankfully the event presented three highly inspiring alumni from Lund University.

  • Rikard Berthilsson, associate professor at the Department of Mathematics and founder of Winfoor, Cognimatics and Neuromathic. Face Warp apps for mobile phones in the beginning of the milennium, camera software for cognitive vision and intelligent surveillance and new technology for wind turbine motor blades are examples on some of Rikard’s innovations and businesses.
  • Jon Hauksson, Faculty of Engineering alumnus and founder of Storytel, one of the largest audio books and e-book companies in Sweden.
  • Evangelia Mitsou, a Faculty of Engineering alumna, and her Venture Cup start-up Swedish Food Bank-Skåne institution against hunger

Results of the second morning meeting: See you in Zimbabwe!
All alumni and friends in Zimbabwe, save the date for our alumni event in Harare on 27 November!

Lunch meeting: Exciting new Career Networking Café for graduate students
Inspiring lunch meeting with one of our talented international alumni and plans for an exciting Career Networking Café for graduate students this autumn.

Afternoon presentation: Lund University’s reputation and media image stay strong
Recent research made by the Kantar Sifo Institute shows that Lund University is among the top three universities with the best reputation among the general public in Sweden.

Top 10 Tips to a Career in Sweden

Have you always been dreaming about a career in Sweden but feel like you have no clue about what it takes to make that dream come true? You don’t have to worry anymore! Here’s our top 10 tips to a career in Sweden, provided to you by Anna Månsson, coordinator at Career Center, School of Economics and Management and Susanne Linné, coordinator at Alumni & Career, External Relations.

  1. The majority of jobs are never advertised, networking is the way to go when looking for jobs. Prepare a good sales pitch about yourself and contact employers directly.
  2. Every job is different and every job requires a different CV and Cover Letter – show that you are interested in the position and in the company/organisation.
  3. A CV is a list of your relevant merits. Do not include everything you have ever done, just the most relevant experience for the job you are applying for. The CV should be no longer than two pages.
  4. A cover letter is called a personal letter in Sweden for a reason… – Personal, not private.
  5. The most important information first in the cover letter – start with letting the reader know why you are interested in working for this particular company and why you are interested in the position.

  6. Where are you visible – check your social media accounts! What do you want employers to find out about you if they google you?
  7. Most recruiters use social media when looking for candidates, so it is a good idea to have an updated profile on LinkedIn for example.
  8. Swedes love teamwork, rarely use titles and are generally informal at work –that also includes the job interview.
  9. Be on time – that is the best way of making a good first impression at a job interview in Sweden.
  10. Always prepare questions to ask the employer – the interview goes both ways.

Now – all you have to do is get out there and catch your dream job. We’re excited to hear your story when you’ve got it! Good luck!
